Congress slams Modi government’s silence on Israel’s Gaza offensive, reaffirms support for Palestine

New Delhi, Aug 21: The Congress party on Thursday strongly criticised the Narendra Modi-led government for its silence amid Israel’s intensified military operations in Gaza and expansion plans in the occupied West Bank.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a statement on social media platform X, condemned Israel’s actions and questioned the Indian government's refusal to speak out. “Israel has begun its military operations to take over Gaza City. Plans for expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank have also been announced. The Indian National Congress condemns both these moves. It also very strongly deplores the Modi Govt’s complete silence on Israel’s unacceptable actions,” he posted.

The Congress reiterated its long-standing position in support of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel. The party's statement comes amid increasing global condemnation of Israel’s military campaign, which, according to reports, has led to over 60,000 Palestinian deaths since the conflict escalated last October.

Other opposition parties including the CPI(M), CPI, and Samajwadi Party have also spoken in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, criticising the ruling BJP for its lack of response.

The conflict flared on October 7, 2023, following a deadly Hamas attack that left hundreds of Israelis dead and nearly 250 taken hostage. Since then, despite intermittent ceasefire announcements, Israel has continued its offensive in Gaza, drawing sharp criticism from several Western nations. Countries such as the UK, France, Australia, and Canada have expressed concern, with some moving towards recognising a Palestinian state.

In light of recent developments, Congress’s remarks signal a renewed emphasis on India's historical support for the two-state solution — an increasingly contested principle as violence continues to engulf the region.
