Panaji, Aug 22: The timeless charm of Mario Miranda’s whimsical sketches is set to be experienced in a whole new way, as the Mario Gallery in Goa prepares to launch an AI-powered art initiative that brings the legendary cartoonist’s style back to life.

The gallery, which houses a vast archival treasure of over 13,000 original drawings by Miranda, has trained an artificial intelligence model to replicate the master’s signature style. Using advanced deep learning techniques such as style transfer and generative modelling, the system has been designed to recognise Miranda’s delicate line work, shading, and playful composition.

The initiative will be launched on August 23 at 4 pm at the Mario Gallery in Torda. Visitors will be able to submit a photo or selfie and instantly receive an AI-generated sketch of themselves – created in the unmistakable style of Mario Miranda.

“It took nearly three months to perfect this technology,” revealed Gerard da Cunha, curator of the Mario Gallery. “This project shows how AI can be used to preserve and celebrate culture. It’s interactive, fun, and offers people the experience of seeing themselves as Mario would have drawn them.”

The process involves complex algorithms that mimic artistic strokes and patterns of Miranda’s hand, giving each portrait the authenticity of a hand-drawn sketch.

This innovation also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in the cultural space, offering new ways to engage with traditional art while keeping alive the legacy of one of India’s most beloved cartoonists.

Mario Miranda, born in Loutolim, Goa, was renowned for his vivid depictions of Goan life, bustling cityscapes, and satirical caricatures. A regular contributor to The Times of India and other leading newspapers, his work was celebrated internationally. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, for his immense contribution to art.
