Washington, Aug 23: White House personnel director Sergio Gor on Saturday expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for nominating him as the next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.

Taking to his official X account, the 38-year-old said it would be the “honour of my life to represent the United States.” Born in Uzbekistan when it was part of the Soviet Union, Mr Gor later moved to Malta and then to the US, where he became active in Republican politics. He previously worked with Senator Rand Paul and later as a fundraiser and book publisher for Trump. He also pursued a stint as an amateur wedding DJ.

Announcing the nomination, Mr Trump described Mr Gor as his “great friend” who had been by his side for years. “As Director of Presidential Personnel, Sergio and his team have hired nearly 4,000 America First Patriots across every Department of our Federal Government in record time,” Trump said on Truth Social, adding that Gor will remain in his White House role until Senate confirmation.

Trump further credited Gor with playing a key role in his campaigns and publishing his best-selling books. “For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador,” he said.

US Vice President JD Vance praised Gor as a “fantastic ambassador,” while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he would be an “excellent representative” of America in one of the nation’s most important global partnerships.

The nomination comes at a time when Trump has imposed a 50 per cent tariff on India, including a 25 per cent penalty for its purchase of Russian oil.
