From tragedy to triumph: The inspiring UPSC journey of Dr Shah Faesal

Kashmir, Aug 24: Dr Shah Faesal, hailing from the remote village of Sogam in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, turned adversity into achievement by becoming the first Kashmiri to top the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2010.

Born in an area deeply affected by militancy, Faesal faced personal tragedy when his father, a schoolteacher, was killed by militants in 2002. Despite this setback, he pursued academics relentlessly, completing his MBBS and a Master’s in Urdu.

Encouraged by well-wishers, he prepared for the civil services at Hamdard Study Circle, clearing the exam in his very first attempt. Faesal chose administration over medicine, believing he could bring broader change through governance rather than in a hospital ward.

His success broke stereotypes and inspired thousands of Kashmiri youth to look beyond militancy, proving that perseverance and education could pave a new path.

Later, he studied public policy at Harvard University, briefly entered politics, and was reinstated into government service after his resignation. Faesal’s journey continues to be a symbol of resilience, hope, and service for Kashmir and the nation.
