Washington, Aug 27: US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that he played a decisive role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan during their military confrontation in May. Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump said a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi led to a ceasefire ‘within five hours’.

Recounting the episode, Trump described Modi as a ‘very terrific man’ and said he warned that a nuclear conflict could erupt if the situation escalated. He claimed he linked progress on trade negotiations with India to de-escalation of hostilities, adding that he threatened high tariffs if tensions were not resolved.

The President further repeated his claim that several fighter jets were shot down during the clashes, though the figures he cited differed from previous statements.

India, however, has consistently denied Trump’s version, reiterating that the May 10 ceasefire was a direct outcome of talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations, with no third-party mediation.
