Mumbai, Aug 27: In a major boost to coastal connectivity, the Maharashtra government has announced the launch of a new Roll-On Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service between Mumbai and Konkan, set to begin operations from September 1.

The service, modeled on the successful Mumbai–Alibaug route, is expected to be a game-changer for passengers heading to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, drastically cutting down travel time and easing congestion on the Mumbai–Goa highway during peak festive seasons such as Ganeshotsav and Holi.

With the new service, the journey between Mumbai and Jaigad (Ratnagiri) will take just three hours, while Mumbai to Vijaydurg (Sindhudurg) will be completed in five hours — compared to the usual 10–12 hours by road.

The ferry also allows passengers to carry their vehicles. Fares are fixed at Rs 6,000 for cars, Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers, and Rs 600 for bicycles. The vessel has a capacity of 50 cars and 30 two-wheelers, ensuring smooth onward travel for families and tourists alike.

Passenger ticket prices range from Rs 2,500 for Economy Class to Rs 9,000 for First Class, with Premium Economy at Rs 4,000 and Business Class at Rs 7,500.

Touted as South Asia’s fastest Ro-Ro ferry, the initiative is being hailed as a landmark step by the state government to revolutionize inter-city travel and provide Konkan residents with faster, more reliable, and comfortable connectivity.
