California, Aug 27: In a shocking development from Southern California, the parents of a missing 7-month-old baby have been charged with his murder, though the infant’s body is yet to be found.
According to court filings on Tuesday, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office charged 32-year-old Jake Haro and his wife, 41-year-old Rebecca Haro, with the murder of their son Emmanuel. The couple has also been booked for filing a false police report.
The Haros, who were scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, will now appear in court on September 4. Each has been placed under a $1 million bail, as per official records.
Authorities believe the child is dead but have withheld further details until a scheduled press briefing.
Just last week, the couple had publicly urged people to help locate their baby. Rebecca had earlier told investigators that she was assaulted while changing Emmanuel’s diaper outside a store in Yucaipa, after which she regained consciousness to find her son missing. However, officers later noted inconsistencies in her statement, following which she stopped cooperating with investigators.
Police teams have since searched the family’s residence in Cabazon and scoured areas near a freeway for the child’s remains. During the search, Jake Haro—clad in a jail jumpsuit—was present, though officials clarified that his role could not be described as “assisting.”
Court records further revealed that Jake Haro had been convicted of child cruelty in 2023 and was ordered to undergo a child abuse treatment program.
While his former attorney defended the couple last week, insisting they were not responsible for the disappearance, Rebecca claimed in a jailhouse interview that her husband would never hurt a child. “I want to be out looking for my baby,” she said.
The case continues to grip California as investigators attempt to piece together the circumstances surrounding baby Emmanuel’s tragic disappearance.
