Thane, Sep 1: A 23-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide while on a video call with her boyfriend in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Titwala on Thursday. Police have detained the boyfriend after her family accused him of harassment and blackmail.

“We have detained the boyfriend and are conducting an inquiry. Her family has alleged that he cheated many girls in a similar manner,” an officer from Titwala police station said.

According to police sources, the two had first connected on Instagram and later entered into a relationship. The man allegedly took her jewellery under various pretexts, and when she demanded its return, he reportedly threatened to leak her private videos.

Unable to bear the harassment, the woman hanged herself at her home. Her family later informed police that she was on a video call with her boyfriend at the time of the incident.

She was cremated without an autopsy, and no FIR has been filed so far, police added.
