Washington, Sep 2: US President Donald Trump’s top trade advisor, Peter Navarro, has termed the display of camaraderie between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin as “troublesome.”
Navarro, while addressing the media at the White House on Monday, said that Modi, as the leader of the world’s largest democracy, should align with Washington, Europe, and Ukraine rather than with Russia and China.
“It’s troublesome. It’s troublesome,” Navarro remarked when asked about the three leaders’ public display of unity. “It was a shame to see Modi getting in bed with the two biggest authoritarian dictators in the world, Putin and Xi Jinping. That doesn’t make any sense,” he added.
The comments come amid one of the most strained phases in India-US relations in over two decades, worsened by President Trump’s tariff policies and repeated criticisms of New Delhi by his administration.
