Mysuru, Sep 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur three years after the violence began, a visit that should have been made during the unrest to hear the people’s sufferings, said chief minister Siddaramaiah. He added that the visit was made only after pressure from opposition parties.

Speaking in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah said, “The Prime Minister remained silent for more than two years on the violence in the northeastern state. His visit to Manipur now is not voluntary but due to heavy pressure from the opposition.”

He pointed out that BJP leaders C T Ravi and Basanagouda Yatnal faced FIRs for making provocative statements that instigated violence. “If BJP leaders deliver provocative speeches, should the government sit idle? We will act against those who disturb peace and harmony in society. This is not politics. We are not targeting anyone. I too am a Hindu — even my name carries the names of both Ishwara and Rama,” he said.

Siddaramaiah further questioned, “If there was equality in Hindu society, if everyone had equal opportunities, why would people convert? Why would untouchability exist? Did we create it?”

On the caste census issue, he said, “The BJP alleges that the Congress government is creating new castes through the caste census. But in reality, it is the central government that is conducting the census. They have even provided a separate column for those who have converted.”
