Man arrested for setting deadly electric trap near Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary

Canacona, Sep 14: Forest officials in Netravali have arrested a man for illegally setting up a high-voltage electric trap intended to kill wildlife near the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary.

The accused, identified as Gurudas Kuskekar of Haldikune, allegedly tapped into a live 11kV power line that runs through his property, attaching a metal hook to draw electricity and electrify the area. The method, described as extremely dangerous, is the same type of setup that previously caused the tragic deaths of two brothers in Quepem.

Forest staff discovered the trap during a routine patrol and narrowly avoided injury. “Had our team not been alert, the outcome could have been deadly,” a forest official said, underlining the serious risk posed to both wildlife and enforcement personnel.

An offence has been registered against Kuskekar under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. He has been produced before the court as part of further legal proceedings.
