From IIT to IAS: Bhawna Garg’s extraordinary first-attempt UPSC success

Punjab, Sep 15: IAS officer Bhawna Garg scripted history by securing All India Rank 1 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination on her very first attempt.

A 1998 batch officer of the Punjab cadre, Bhawna graduated in chemical engineering from IIT Kanpur the same year. Known for her academic brilliance, she earned the prestigious Ratan Swaroop Memorial Award for her outstanding performance across all subjects. She had also secured the top rank in the IIT-JEE entrance examination earlier.

Straight out of IIT, Bhawna appeared for the UPSC exam and, with sheer determination, topped the country’s most competitive exam at just one go—an achievement that continues to inspire aspirants.

Bhawna went on to serve in multiple administrative capacities, where she tackled diverse challenges and implemented impactful initiatives. Her career has reflected not only strong governance skills but also a deep commitment to public welfare and an ability to handle complex administrative issues with clarity and efficiency.
