Margao, Sep 16: Tension gripped Varca’s Pedda ward on Monday after locals objected to JCB machinery operating inside a hotel project site that reportedly contains sand dunes in the CRZ area.
Led by social activist Sohail Furtado and Warren Alemao, residents met Varca Sarpanch Flavia Barretto demanding an immediate halt to the work. Panchayat member Salesiana Fernandes, representing the Pedda ward, also joined the discussions.
Sohail alleged that the project’s construction is illegal, claiming the proponents are using a sanad meant for a residential plot while undertaking commercial work. He added that the two plots for the project have not been formally amalgamated and that no project board has been installed. He urged the Panchayat to revoke the licence and inspect the site with authorities from TCP, the Water Resources Department, GSPCB and the CRZ.
Responding to the complaint, Sarpanch Barretto issued a stop-work notice under Section 64(J) of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, directing the hotel proponent to immediately halt activity and produce approved plans and licences within seven days, failing which further action will follow.
Barretto clarified that the original construction licence was granted on February 22, 2021, during a previous Panchayat, and the current body only renewed it on October 5, 2024. A joint inspection with relevant authorities is expected soon to verify alleged irregularities.
