Jerusalem, Sep 16: Israel’s Health Ministry has confirmed 481 new measles cases, raising the total to 1,251 since the outbreak began in early April. Experts estimate that the actual number of infections could be between 2,250 and 3,950, based on high hospitalization rates and community reports. Currently, 29 patients remain hospitalized, most under six years old, with five in intensive care, including one on ECMO support.

Tragically, the outbreak has claimed the lives of two unvaccinated boys aged 18 months and two years. In response, a nationwide vaccination campaign launched in May has administered over 142,000 doses so far. In cities with active outbreaks, the ministry has allowed residents, including infants from neighboring areas with contacts in affected cities, to receive immediate vaccinations without appointments.

Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, spreads through respiratory droplets and can cause serious complications or death, especially in children. Symptoms typically appear 10–14 days after exposure and begin with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a distinctive rash starting on the face and neck before spreading across the body.

Despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, measles remains a significant global health threat. In 2023 alone, an estimated 107,500 people, mostly children under five, died from the disease worldwide. Health officials continue to stress that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection and control outbreaks.
