Bantwal, Sep 21: Bantwal Town police have arrested a man from Kerala on charges of stealing Rs 1 lac in cash from the pocket of a passenger who was waiting for a bus at BC Road bus stand.

The arrested has been identified as Nazir Punnayyar from Thrissur district, Kerala.

According to police, the victim, Ranganath Bellala from Kundapura, had come to B C Road on August 14 with cash amounting to Rs 1.60 lac after selling his car, intending to purchase another used vehicle. However, due to discrepancies in the documents, the deal was not finalised. He then stayed overnight at a friend’s house in Kaikamba.

On August 15, while waiting at B C Road bus stand to travel to Kottigehara, Bellala had Rs 1.60 lac in his pant pocket that included three bundles of Rs 50,000 each and one bundle of Rs 10,000. After boarding the bus, he realised that cash worth Rs 1 lac - two bundles of Rs 50,000 - was missing.

He immediately lodged a complaint at the Bantwal Town police station. Acting swiftly, a police team led by Inspector Anantha Padmanabha traced the accused and arrested him in Mangaluru.

Nazir was later produced before the court.
