Abbas urges Hamas to disarm, condemns October 7 attack

Ramallah, Sep 23: Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas on Monday called on Hamas to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority (PA) and ruled out any role for the group in governing Gaza, while denouncing its deadly assault on Israel last year.

“Hamas will have no role in governing Gaza. Hamas and other factions must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority,” Abbas said in a video address to a United Nations summit on a two-state solution, after being denied a US visa to attend in person.

“We also condemn the killing and detention of civilians, including Hamas actions on October 7, 2023,” he added, stressing that only a unified Palestinian administration could pursue lasting peace with Israel.
