Udupi: Malpe Beach reopens to tourists; barricades removed, water sports resume

Udupi, Sept 23: With the end of the monsoon ban period, Malpe Beach has flung its gates open once again, inviting tourists back to its shores. The safety barricades erected along the beach to prevent entry into the sea have now been dismantled — and water sports activities have officially resumed.

Popular water adventure experiences such as jet skiing, parasailing, banana rides, bumper rides, zorbing, and boat rounds were relaunched, drawing early crowds. With the festive season of Navaratri opening, officials anticipate a surge in tourist footfall.

Since morning, visitors have been arriving at the beach in large numbers, some stepping straight into the surf to enjoy the waves, while others eagerly queued up for adrenaline-pumping water sports.

Seasonal safety measures in place

Despite the dangers posed by turbulent monsoon tides, Malpe remains a draw for tourists from across Karnataka and beyond, even during the rainy season. However, with high swells and unpredictable currents, swimming or playing in the sea becomes highly risky during this period.

"Even when waves are at their most powerful, some tourists still venture into the waters, often ignoring warnings," officials noted. In response, the district administration enforces seasonal safety protocols every year for a minimum of four months.

During this period, a 10-foot-high fishnet barricade is installed roughly 20 feet away from the shoreline, stretching across the length of the beach to deter beachgoers from approaching the rough sea.

Officials urge caution despite reopening

With the beach now officially reopened and adventure activities back on offer, Udupi deputy commissioner Swaroopa T K has urged visitors to remain alert and avoid taking unnecessary risks. “Access to the beach and water sports has been restored, but everyone must exercise caution and avoid any reckless behaviour in or near the sea,” Swaroopa said.
