Guide to civil marriage in Abu Dhabi: Fast, legal, & internationally recognized

Daijiworld Media Network – Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Sep 30: Abu Dhabi offers a civil marriage service under Law No. 14 of 2021, allowing couples to solemnize legally recognized, secular marriages at the Civil Family Court. Designed for residents and visitors—except Muslim UAE nationals—the system is fast, straightforward, and internationally accepted, providing a practical option for expatriates and mixed-nationality couples.

Who can marry:

Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old, unmarried, not closely related, and provide mutual consent. Muslim UAE nationals remain under Sharia-based family law. Tourists and non-residents can apply online but must be present in Abu Dhabi for the ceremony. The civil marriage scheme is part of wider UAE reforms since 2021, aimed at offering non-religious personal-status options and aligning with international norms.

Application process and documents:

Couples can apply via the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department’s portal or authorised typing centres. Key documents include passports (and Emirates ID for residents), a completed application form, and proof of prior marital dissolution, if applicable. A prenuptial agreement is optional.

• Standard service: AED 300, processed in ~10 working days.
• Express service: AED 2,500, processed in 1 working day with a choice of ceremony date.

Ceremony details:

On the wedding day, both parties attend the Civil Family Court with ID. No external witnesses are required; the civil marriage officer serves as the legal witness. Couples can exchange rings, recite personal vows, and invite guests or a photographer. Marriage certificates issued are legally binding and can be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for overseas use.

Why expats prefer Abu Dhabi:

Abu Dhabi has become a preferred destination for expatriates and mixed-nationality couples, offering a simple, transparent, and fast process compared to religious or bureaucratic alternatives. The system is especially appealing to couples facing hurdles due to differences in religion or nationality, providing a single, state-backed channel for formalizing marriages.

Legal benefits and global recognition:

Certificates from Abu Dhabi’s civil marriage system are recognized internationally, supporting visa applications, bank accounts, inheritance rights, spouse sponsorship, property ownership, and other legal and social benefits. For expatriates, this ensures peace of mind, confirming that marital rights and obligations are legally enforceable locally and abroad.

Abu Dhabi’s civil marriage framework thus offers efficiency, legal certainty, and international acceptance, making it a practical choice for couples seeking a hassle-free, recognized marriage.
