Music teacher Carmelita Alvares to receive International Music Day honour

Mangaluru, Oct 3: The International Music Day Honour presented by Mandd Sobhann and Sumell has been announced for Mangaluru-based music teacher, Carmelita Alvares.

The honour will be conferred on October 5 during the 286th Monthly Theatre at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar, at 6:30 pm. The honour will be presented by Mandd Sobhann president Louis Pinto, secretary Ronald Crasta and treasurer Sunil Monteiro, along with Sumell coordinator Raina Sequeira and Treasurer Clara Pinto.

Carmelita Alvares started her musical journey at the age of 9. She learned to play violin and keyboard, receiving training from music teachers like Marian Pinto, Vimala Lobo, and Gladys Silver.

She graduated from the prestigious Trinity College in London and began teaching. Students of all ages have learned music from her. Many students who received their musical training from her are now renowned across the globe. She has served as the founding secretary of the Sandesha Foundation and as a teacher in holiday camps. She has also presented music programs on All India Radio, Mangaluru.

Following the felicitation programme, the Sumell Singing Club will present a Konkani and other multi-lingual Antyakshari. Prior to this, Clara D’Cunha will present a flute performance. The event is open to all.

Sumell was started in 2015 under leadership of late Eric Ozario, the Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann, with the goal of practicing singing in the Alto, Tenor, Soprano, and Bass voices.

The International Music Day celebration in Konkani has been conducted since. So far, Vimala Lobo, Gladys Silver, Charandas Mallya, Ustad Rafique Khan, Ronald and Donald D’Silva (brothers), Ben Britto, Oscar Weltha, Roshan Martis, Simon Pais, and Niranjan Sunil Kumar have received this honour.
