Rohit, Kohli likely for Australia ODIs; selectors face tough calls

Daijiworld Media Network – Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Oct 3: The future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODIs continues to spark debate, but both stalwarts are expected to board the flight to Australia for the three-match ODI series starting October 19 in Perth.

National selectors, however, are likely to face a few tough calls due to fitness concerns and workload management. Hardik Pandya (quadriceps injury) and Rishabh Pant (foot fracture) remain unavailable, while Test skipper Shubman Gill, who has already played the Asia Cup and is now leading in the Test series against the West Indies, may be asked to rest from limited-overs cricket.

Rohit and Kohli, after a seven-month layoff since India’s Champions Trophy triumph in March, have made strong returns. Kohli hit a century against Pakistan and top-scored in the semi-final against Australia, while Rohit produced a match-winning knock in the final against New Zealand. Sources said there is “no reason” to alter Rohit’s leadership role unless he opts to focus solely on batting.

Both legends have retired from Tests and T20Is, making ODIs their only format, leading to speculation about their longevity with the 2027 World Cup in South Africa in sight. However, with only six ODIs this season — three each against Australia and New Zealand — officials hinted that no hasty decisions will be taken.

The immediate focus remains on the home T20 World Cup early next year and securing maximum WTC points from four home Tests in 2025. Interestingly, broadcaster Jio Hotstar’s official teaser for the ODI series featured portraits of Rohit and Kohli, indicating their likely inclusion.

The selectors will meet on Saturday, the third day of the Ahmedabad Test, to finalise squads, though there is no clarity on the announcement timeline. The upcoming Australia tour will pack eight games, including five T20Is, into 19 days — a challenge compounded by frequent travel.

India wrap up the T20I series on November 9 before taking on South Africa in a home Test starting November 14 in Kolkata.
