Farrukhabad, Oct 5: At least two people were killed and five others sustained injuries in a powerful blast at a coaching centre in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad on Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the explosion occurred around 3.19 pm in the Kadri Gate area and is suspected to have been caused by excessive concentration of methane gas in a septic tank located in the basement of the building.

“Field units and fire services rushed to the spot immediately. Prima facie, it appears to be a coaching institute with a septic tank in the basement. The blast likely occurred due to the accumulation of concentrated methane. A switchboard was also found nearby, which might have triggered the explosion. The injured are undergoing treatment, and a detailed investigation is underway,” Farrukhabad Superintendent of Police Arti Singh told reporters.

District Magistrate Ashutosh Kumar Dwivedi said a committee headed by the City Magistrate has been constituted to investigate the cause of the incident. “An explosion took place in the septic tank of a coaching centre. Prima facie, it is being attributed to the non-exhaustion of methane gas. Two people have died and five others are under treatment. A committee has been formed to probe the cause,” the DM told ANI.

Rescue and relief operations are in progress, and further details are awaited.
