Wade Ormsby wins Jakarta International after Play-Off thriller

Daijiworld Media Network – Jakarta

Jakarta, Oct 6: Australian Wade Ormsby claimed the Jakarta International Championship on Sunday, defeating Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off. Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar narrowly missed out on a sixth win in Indonesia after a challenging final round.

The 45-year-old Ormsby entered the final round tied at -11 with Vincent and Bhullar, the 2023 BNI Indonesian Masters champion. While Bhullar and Vincent picked up an early birdie on the first hole, Bhullar lost ground with three dropped shots on the front nine. Despite two birdies after the turn, doubles on the 15th and 18th holes ended his chances.

The play-off saw Ormsby make a routine par on the par-four 18th, while Vincent found water with his second shot. Both had finished the day on -12, one shot ahead of a tightly packed chasing group, including Vincent’s younger brother Kieran, Korea’s Doyeob Mun, and Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert, Poom Saksansin, and Sadom Kaewkanjana.

Bhullar finished as the highest placed Indian at seven-under, with Viraj Madappa carding a 66 to finish three under, and S. Chikkarangappa on two over after a 74.

Ormsby’s win marked his fifth Asian Tour victory and second on The International Series, following his 2023 triumph at the International Series Thailand.

“It was a bit of a grind… I probably didn’t have my best stuff out there, but I was just hanging in there. Feel bad for Scotty, but I hit a couple of great shots in the play-off hole,” Ormsby said.

The next leg of the series will be the International Series Philippines, scheduled from October 23 to 26 in Manila.
