California, Oct 8: California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed AB 268, officially declaring Diwali a state holiday starting January 1, 2026.

The law allows public schools and community colleges to close on Diwali and permits state employees to take the day off with pay.

The legislation, co-authored by Assembly Members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, recognises Diwali as a festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists.

California becomes the third US state to officially recognise Diwali as a statewide holiday, after Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

This year, Diwali will be celebrated on October 21.
