Father Muller Medical College successfully performs complex high-risk renal cancer surgery

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 13: In September 2025, a multidisciplinary team at Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) successfully performed a Right Radical Nephrectomy with IVC Thrombectomy on a 58-year-old male diagnosed with Right Renal Cell Carcinoma with Level III IVC thrombus (Major Blood Vessel involvement).

The complex procedure was executed using Total Circulatory Arrest (TCA) via Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB), an advanced technique that enables the safe removal of a tumour thrombus from the IVC by temporarily arresting circulation under deep hypothermia. In this case, the CPB duration was 165 minutes, with TCA maintained for 17 minutes.

This challenging surgery required seamless coordination among multiple specialties:

• Urology Team: Dr Prashanth Adiga (Professor & HOD), Dr Nandakishore B, Dr Kishan Raj, Dr Sajal Gupta, Dr Bharat V S, and Dr Patel Nirmay J
• Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS): Dr Anand K T (Professor & HOD)
• Surgical Gastroenterology: Dr Ganesh M K (Professor & HOD)
• Anaesthesia: Dr Chetana Anand

The patient made a smooth recovery and was discharged in stable condition after a five-day hospital stay. During a follow-up visit in the first week of October 2025, he was found to be in good health.

This successful outcome underscores the integrated expertise and advanced surgical capabilities at Father Muller Medical College, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge and patient-centred care.
