Mangaluru, Oct 23: The Legion of Mary of St Sebastian Church, Bendur, celebrated its 79th Annual Feast with deep faith and joy on October 21. The celebration began with a solemn thanksgiving Mass, celebrated by Fr Walter D’Souza, the parish priest, along with Fr Praveen Joy Saldanha, professor at St Joseph Seminary and the diocesan spiritual director of the Legion of Mary, as the co-celebrant.
In his inspiring homily, Fr Praveen Joy Saldanha reflected on the life of Mother Mary as a model of humility and silent service. He highlighted that true discipleship lies in doing small acts of love and kindness quietly, without seeking recognition—just as Mother Mary did. He encouraged the members of the Legion to continue their mission of prayer, service, and compassion in the footsteps of Mary.

The liturgy was beautifully organized by the Legion members, with their active participation in the choir, readings, and offertory procession, symbolizing their unity and devotion.
The festive celebration continued in the Community Hall. The programme began with a soulful prayer song by the Legion members, setting a spiritual tone for the evening. Lidwin Gonsalves, President of the Legion, welcomed the gathering with warm words and floral greetings. Leema Lobo, Secretary, presented the annual report highlighting the Legion’s spiritual activities, house visits, rosary prayers, and community outreach throughout the year.
The event was graced by the presidents and members of the Legion of Mary from neighbouring parishes, as well as presidents of various parish associations of St Sebastian Church, Bendur, whose presence added joy and significance to the occasion.
Fr Walter D’Souza, in his address, congratulated the members for completing 79 years of dedicated service to the Church. He commended them for their humble and unseen acts of faith, likening their mission to that of Mother Mary, who served silently but powerfully. He encouraged them to continue being the heart of prayer and service within the parish.
Fr Praveen Joy Saldanha, in his message, praised the members’ strong devotion and said that just as Mary interceded at Cana and supported Elizabeth, the Legion members too bring comfort, strength, and hope to many through their spiritual efforts and prayers.
The evening was made lively with songs, dances, and skits performed by the members, which brought joy and entertainment to the audience. The vicar himself added delight to the celebration by singing a melodious song. Linus Pinto conducted fun-filled games, and the winners were awarded prizes.
Charlotte Fernandes, vice president, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, guests, and all who contributed to the success of the event.
The celebration concluded with the blessing of the meal by Fr Walter D’Souza, followed by a fellowship dinner, marking a joyful end to a day filled with prayer, gratitude, and togetherness.
