Udupi, Feb 14: State higher education minister and Udupi district incharge Dr V S Acharya was given a tearful farewell on Tuesday February 14 night at the Rajatadri district complex in Manipal here, amidst a galaxy of leaders, politicians, well-wishers and thousands of people who had gathered from across the region.

Veteran BJP leaders L K Advani, Eshwarappa, Jagadish Shettar, C M Udasi, Anant Kumar, Halappa, C T Ravi, chief minister Sadananda Gowda, former chief minister Yeddyurappa, former union minister Janardhan Poojary, legislative council chairman D H Shankaramurthy, former MLA U R Sabhapati, MLA Prabhakar Bangera, MLA Raghupati Bhat, Vasant Salian, Katapadi Ramapujary, MLA Gopal Bhandary, Harikrishna Punaroor, DC Dr Reju, Fr Mathew Vas, parish priest of Angelore church, Fr Richard Coellho, administrator of Fr  Muller Charitable Hospital, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, Rahim Uchil, Kota Srinivasa Poojary, Pratapchandra Shetty and many others were present to pay their final respects.

An emotional Sadananda Gowda said that Dr Acharya had always strived to build BJP's image in the state and give the party a firm footing. "He was a visionary, an extraordinary scholar who led a simple life," he said.

He further added, "I had planned to seek his help in presenting the budget, for which he had even agreed. If he had been alive, we could have come up with a very good budget. His blessings will always guide me in my duty as a chief minister."

Primary and higher education minister Vishweshwar Kageri expressed his shock at the sudden death of Dr Acharya and said, "He had rendered great service to Udupi and ably led the town municipality. He was affectionate and worked hard to realize his dreams."

Former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake in his tribute said that Dr Acharya was known for his simplicity and goodness. "He was a rare politician, without any blemish on his image. He had a unique personality that defined him. He did not have a partisan mentality, and firmly adhered to his beliefs and principles."

Dr Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva's Education Trust, Moodbidri, was also present. Showering his tribute on Dr Acharya, he said that he considered him his guru. "Dr Acharya guided and enabled me to lead a life of values. He had a pure heart. No other politician has done as much for Udupi's development as he did."

Dr Acharya's body was then taken in a procession to Beedinagudde, his hometown, for the last rites, which were conducted by his sons Dr Kiran and Dr Raviraj Acharya. Dr Acharya was given state honour with three rounds of bullets fired into the air. Priest Srinivas Tantri oversaw the funeral rites.

Rituals related to last rites were also held at Dr Acharya's residence prior to the funeral. A programme will be held at Ammanni Ramana Shetty Hall on Wednesday February 15 to pay homage.

Dr Acharya is originally from Janata Party and vetern member of Janata Party. He used to lose Lok sabha elections continuosly during Janata Party time .But he did not go back and he went on fighting till he won !!!!. Though he is a vetern in politics his real fame came during BJP government. simple,Fantastic person, humble, trustworthy, honest and soft spoken.Probably one of the few politicians who was truely honest to his party during win or lose.Never seen him speak against anybody. May his great soul rest in peace. Great and harmless personality

Dr. Acharya, Noble person, peaceful death. Even Mr. Advani came to his funeral. That shows how much he was loved n admired within BJP. Even opposition party's all cast creed n communities loved him and admired him. Never hungry for power nor lobbied for any post. Nor took advantage of designation. BJP's Bishma is no more. One strong Pillar of coastal Karnataka came down. May God take him to heaven directly. He will be remembered for ever n ever, Amen.

Once I did not do my home work, realized that I would be punished if I go to school and started my drama of stomach pain. My father took me to Dr. Acharya, probably he understood my drama, took me inside, checked me and said in whispering voice “I think you did not do the home work?” I nodded my head. “Will you go home and complete it?” again I nodded my head. He came out and said to my father “not to worry let him stay at home today” and gave some tablets (Vitamin I believe) and did not charge anything. May his soul rest in peace.

I have many stories tell of his humbleness. If I am not mistaken it was in 60s, we three boys were walking down to Kalmady from Udupi church on a Sunday evening. Dr. V.S. Acharya’s two wheeler broke down somewhere near Adi-Udupi and he was trying to fix it himself. When we saw him alone, we also sat there and did a little bit what we could to help him. When he fixed the machine and started it, he humbly said “if I had a car, I would have taken all three of you, now one of you can come with me.” May his soul rest in peace.

An Outstanding, Bold, Intellectual Political Personality Of Coastal Karnataka, was a victim of excess' of Emergency Rule imposed by late Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1975-1977. As a Statesman Dr Acharya firmly stood by Indian Constitution, opposed tototarian rule during dark era of emergency rule in India. Leaving behind his infant and young children he was in prison during Emergency rule. I recall his campaign for Udupi parlimentary consttuency elections in 1977 and his Karnataka State Assembly bid from Brahmavar constituency in 1980. I have met Dr.Acharya several times in Bangalore and he is such a simple person but a great personality. I met him to invite him to an event that was to have taken place on the last day of the assembly July 30th 2009. He could not promise his presence but however he took my mobile number and promptly gave me a call on the second day of the event that was related to Higher Education, when he was the Home Minister then. and told me that he was free to come to attend the event, however I told him that most of the delegates had gone to Mysore for sight seeing and the gathering strength would not be good enough to actually have him at the event.

He thanked me and told me "Rajesh, if you have any event in the future and need my presence...just call me" I was really humbled by such remarks and felt good that Ministers such as Dr.Acharya definetly had character to show his mettle.

I just can't believe he is no more. Aftet emergency 1977 when every one supported Congress at our area my dad alone supported n canvased for V. S. Acharya from Janatha party, later he contested for MLA too. After 1980 Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde contested from Janatha Dal n won continuously n become minister at level. I wil miss Dr. Acharya very much. I am happy that he was not involved in anu scandals n was a clean politician. We lost a good leader.
