Bangalore: For Love's Sake, Three End Life on V-Day in Karnataka

Bangalore, Feb 15 (IANS): Valentine's Day turned tragic for three lovers, including a woman, in Karnataka Tuesday as they opted to commit suicide at the altar of cupid.

College student Yallappa, 25, and his beloved Bharti, 22, opted to die by jumping in front of a moving train near Gulbarga, about 650 km from here. Their parents were opposed to their marriage on caste considerations.

"As the two lovers belonged to different castes, opposition from their parents forced them to take such an extreme step on a day like this," Gulbarga Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivannagouda Patil told IANS by phone.

Their mutilated bodies were found on the rail tracks between Gulbarga and Babla local stations, with a suicide note in local language (Kannada) that they were ending their lives as their parents were opposed to their alliance.

"They were studying in a Gulbarga college while their parents lived in a nearby village," Patil said.

Subenshu Laskar, 19, jumped to death from the top of a five-storey hostel building in south Bangalore early Tuesday after his girl friend declined to give consent to marry him on Valentine's Day.

"Laskar, hailing from Kolkata, was a student of Oxford College studying in first year degree course. According to his friends in the hostel, Laskar appeared dejected after a long conversation with his girl friend (name withheld) late Monday," said J.P. Nagar police station inspector V.S. Agadi.

Valentine's Day passed off peacefully in major towns and cities across the state barring a clash between groups favouring and opposing the celebrations on the lovers' day at Mysore, about 150 km from here.

"Activists of Jai Karnataka clashed with the pro-Hindu group Sri Ram Sene members opposing youngsters celebrating the event in public places and college campuses. We separated the pro-and-anti groups and dispersed them to prevent any law and order problem in the city," a police official told reporters at Mysore.

@Lydia,please explain me which values you are interested to teach the children,Whether they are Indian values or western. If it is western, then dating,V-day are not et all a problem for them.If it is Indian, then they should not have access to all such evils ( so considered by Indians). All that needed is either we should make our children Indian or western but not in between.
BTW, smoking and alcohol are also gifts of western people only. Both the above are not needed for our climatic conditions.

    Isac,

There is an adage 'two swallows don't make it a summer'. Accordingly, a few peoples demand to ban tobacco and alcohol does not stop the rest of the world from consuming it nor cigarette/alcohol manufacturers go bankrupt over Saffron brigade's morcha.

Values imbibed in our children throughout the year do not get uprooted by celebrating 14th Feb. nor do they get implanted by these men's protest.

However, the very people who oppose V-Day, do support the porn-clip-watching ministers. Does it not display sufficient hypocrisy or do you want further explanation ?

Please do not correlate these two suicides to Valentine’s Day.
Yallappa and Bharti died due to caste related problems.
Laskar is 19 and wants to get married on Valentine’s Day. He is immature, irresponsible and headless boy.
Our Politician too died on Valentine’s Day. Should we correlate his death also?

What have they achieved in life to get settled in life at the age of 19 odd. This is absolutely crazy, they don't know what is marriage after all. They don't think what they will be doing for their livelihood. Maybe he thought baap ka zaidad hai,I can live on that basis. Bade baap ke bigde hui aulad.. At least the girl is sensible to reject.

Lydia Lobo, well said, this Jerome n John, Manglore are fake names no need to reply their comments. I do agree with you. Me too against students involving love affair before fully grown up n standing on their feet. V. Day joins broken heart together n not breaking any ones heart. Those who has heart they only understand it. Heartless people should stay away from V. Day.

This impotent people are good only for spreading hatred in society. My personal view is, its better to marry the one whom we love, happiness after marriage depend upon the understanding bw couples. Even arranged marriages fails n breaks up within months. not to worry bat foolish comments by spineless skeletons. I always look for your matured comments.

@ Lydia, I am in favour of banning alcohol and smoking as both of them are evils.I dont know if you have problems.
There are few readers who support V-day here are sort of 'neither here nor there'.They support v-day just because it is opposed by safron group and they dont want their children to fall in love with anybody. This is called as double standard.

Its indeed sad on Valentine day 3 people lost their life, what it suggest that the feeling of a person towards the others, there is nothing guaranteed in life, no one know whether he will reach safely, in todays world it is important to know one thing, God has created us and he only can ask our life back, no one has the right to end their life, life is to be lived courageously and with a purpose, no life is filled with 365 days happiness, if all days are happy then what is life called for? When a person undergoes, pain, suffering and he live with a purpose to overcome them then only it is called a real gentleman life. I feel pity on those who lost their life, what it shows also is the maturity level of the person, if a girl doesnot like you that is not the end of world same goes for female also, In life one cannot force a person to like us or love us, it should happen and only such life can be filled with happiness and not forcefully forcing a person or threatening them, may the almighty give each and everyone good sense of humour, wisdom and understanding to know what is right and also to know even during right time what is going wrong sometimes.

How can youths, who can not face society, fall in love…? Falling in love is not meant for cowards, guys… u need some guts…
    @Paddu,
Regarding incident happened in Gulbarga, the both boy & girl are from Hindu religion (as their name sounds)… still, why there is caste considerations or barrier…???. What made them to take such decision…??? Find out answer for this question, if you are really concerned about your culture & support true lovers within your religion.
Because of these kind of coward people, you can not justify yourself saying, this is why you are doing great things by opposing V-Day

These products are commodities but children are our treasure. We brought them into this world and we have a duty to guide them.

    John & Jerome,

When parents have a friendly relationship with children, each and every issue is discussed between them including some boy/girl trying lure her/him. Advising the child at right time that the studies are priority not love/marriage guides them on right path. When there is no lover, where comes the Valentines day ?

We don't have a dozen of children in today's time like it used to be earlier. Just one/two that we have need to be watched like hawk and if parents do that (instead of blaming western culture), I don't think celebration or not of V-Day becomes an issue at all !

@Lydia, you are too idealistic and seems you are inspired by some old hindi movies.
Come on, at one end you support valentine day celebration and at the other end you said that students should not do so. Tell me, can you stop students from drinking, smoking etc.Same way if valentine day is allowed, they will really enjoy it.
As you rightly said,Caste descrimination is a matter of concern in christians too. There are dalit christians who are not married by upper caste RCs.

@ Lydia, why you guys ( the so called forward thinking) dont ensure valentine not celebrated by students.
As per my understanding, the real benificiaries of valentine's day are only few buisiness people who sell fancy gifts.
Some people think that Feb-14 is the auspicious day to start legal love affair, they are really stupid.
BTW, those who are in favour of celebration of valentine day, mostly wont tolerate if their son/daughter in love with someone from other religion or caste.

Praveen Kumar, the lovers did not commit suicide for not allowing them to celebrate Valentine day, but, due to age old caste system. For your information, BD & Ram Sene is nothing but a goonda organisation who are jobless (unwilling to work) and illiterate (did not want to study). They have no right to do moral Policing.

Its a coincidence that the suicide took place on Valentines day. The real reason for the suicide (caste discrimination)has been there throughout their relationship.

However, love or desire to marry while in college is too early. One must study when parents are providing this luxury love can happen anytime in life later on because if parents give in to your demand and disown you, you have no means of income to live the life you chose. This is exactly when the love will fly out of the window and the girl will end up in a brothel with nowhere else to go.
