Canacona, Oct 25: Heavy rains have wreaked havoc on paddy fields across Canacona, damaging crops extensively and disrupting harvesting operations in around 2,500 hectares of kharif paddy cultivation in the taluka.

At Mone in Cotigao village, several fields remained waterlogged, with fallen paddy grains beginning to sprout due to prolonged flooding. Canacona Zonal Agricultural Officer Mahendra Pagi said, “Most of the flattening occurred during the downpour on Friday, affecting farmers across multiple villages in the taluka. However, the fallen paddy can still be harvested if rainfall stops for at least three days.”

Pagi added that three harvesters scheduled for paddy fields in Poinguinim have been delayed due to the rains, further affecting harvesting operations.

Unlike other talukas in the State, sowing in Canacona typically begins as late as the end of July, with the paddy crop harvested mainly in November and December, following a crop cycle of 110 to 150 days or more.

Meanwhile, incessant rains accompanied by lightning and thunder continued to disrupt normal life across the taluka.
