Israel conducts airstrike in central Gaza amid fragile ceasefire; four injured, says hospital

Gaza, Oct 26: Tensions flared once again in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli military carried out an airstrike in the Nuseirat area on Saturday, targeting an alleged Islamic Jihad operative — despite an ongoing ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump.

According to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strike was conducted after intelligence indicated that a member of the Islamic Jihad group was planning an imminent attack on Israeli troops.

“A short while ago, the IDF conducted a precise strike in the Nuseirat area in the central Gaza Strip, targeting a terrorist from the Islamic Jihad terrorist organisation who planned to carry out an imminent terrorist attack against IDF troops,” the military said in an official statement.

The airstrike marks a breach in what had been a fragile truce lasting nearly two weeks between Israel and Hamas, which is allied with Islamic Jihad. While the ceasefire remains technically in place, Israel has maintained that it reserves the right to respond to any potential threats to its security or forces.

Inside the Hamas-administered enclave, Al-Awda Hospital confirmed that several civilians were injured in the attack. “The hospital has received four injured people following the Israeli occupation’s targeting of a civilian car in the Al-Ahli Club area in Nuseirat Camp in central Gaza,” hospital officials said.

The Israeli military reiterated that operations would continue as needed to “remove any immediate threat” to its troops and prevent future attacks.

Meanwhile, the latest strike has once again raised concerns over the sustainability of the ceasefire agreement and the fragile calm in the war-battered region, as both sides remain on high alert.
