Sullia: Man detained over derogatory Facebook posts against CM, Banu Mushtaq

Sullia, Oct 30: Cases have been registered at Sullia and Subrahmanya police stations after a Facebook user allegedly posted derogatory remarks against chief minister and writer, activist, and lawyer Banu Mushtaq, who inaugurated the Dasara celebrations.

According to police sources, a Facebook account named Purush Acharya had posted offensive content targeting Banu Mushtaq and the chief minister. Following this, a case was registered at the Sullia police station under Sections 296, 196, and 354 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (Crime No. 112/2025), and another case at Subrahmanya police station under Sections 353(3) and 353(4) of the BNS (Crime No. 55/2025).

With assistance from the Dakshina Kannada District Police’s Social Media Monitoring Cell, Sullia police took the accused, identified as Purushottama Acharya Barimaru, a resident of Bantwal taluk, into custody for interrogation.

Further legal proceedings are underway, police said.
