Udupi, Feb 16: Officials of the district crime intelligence bureau here arrested two persons, who have been accused of stealing an engine fitted to a country fishing boat that was anchored at the estuary near Padukare, Malpe.
The accused have been identified as Naufal alias Kabul (23) from Bengre Casba, Tannirbavi in Mangalore, and Saqeeb alias Sabbu (19) from K S Rao Nagar in Karnad, Mulky. A Maruti Omni car and Yamaha engine of 9.9 horse power were confiscated from their possession, when they were carrying the engine to Bhatkal for sale on February 13. Reportedly, the engine costs about Rs 2.5 lac.
The police intercepted the vehicle in which the accused were moving to Bhatkal, at Santekatte near here. The theft had occurred in September last, and a case was registered in Malpe police station. It is learnt that one of the accused, Saqeeb, faces cases relating to theft of cows, car theft, robbing of gold and cash from students, etc in Manipal police station. Naufal’s name appears in the police records as an accused relating to a gang involved with theft of goats, registered in Padubidri police station.
The police team, which made the arrests, was guided by assistant police commissioner, M V Venkateshappa.
