Udupi, Feb 17: A woman from Hejamady near Padubidri tried to kill herself, having been frustrated over the sexual harassment suffered at the hands of a person who repeatedly called her over the phone.

Geeta, residing in a rented house on Maruti Road in Hejamady, consumed sleeping pills with an intention to commit suicide, unable to bear the harassment. She works as a beautician, while her husband, Aneet, is an electrician by profession.

It is said that a person named Keshava Suvarna repeatedly called her over her mobile phone, and talked vulgarly, in sexually explicit manner. Overtaken by emotions, Geeta consumed excess dose of sleeping pills on Monday evening, and became ill. Aneet, who reached home at night, saw his wife’s condition, and admitted her into a hospital in Mulky, where Geeta is recovering.

Relating to the incident, district JDS president, Deviprasad Shetty, through a press statement, demanded for the immediate arrest of Keshava Suvarna, Hejamady regional unit president of Vishwa Hindu Parishat, for harassing the woman by with obscene mobile calls. He said that the policemen should immediately take legal action against Suvarna and provide justice to the aggrieved family.

“The Sangh Parivar, which acts like the inheritor of Indian culture, and frequently pledges to follow the ideals set forth by Lord Ram, has been engaged in spreading demonic culture. Coming in a series of sexual escapades of Renukacharya and Halappa, followed by watching of porn video in the assembly by three ministers and allowing rave party at St Mary’s Island, the uncivilized and shameful behaviour of the Parivar’s leaders has spread its tentacles even to rural areas,” he commented.

He pointed out that these organizations have been assaulting people speaking with friends from other religions, and blocking observation of Valentine’s Day. He accused them of keeping quiet when their own people are at fault. He warned that the JDS activists will catch hold of the culprit and hand him over to the police, if there is pressure from vested interests to allow the guilty to go scot free.
