Mangaluru, Nov 16: In a horrifying incident, a middle-aged man died after being brutally mauled by a stray dog in the courtyard of a house near the Kumpala Bypass in Ullal taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Dayananda (54), a resident of Kumpala Moorukatte.

The attack occurred between 3 am and 4 am when Dayananda, who was sleeping in front of a shop, was assaulted by a stray dog. Though he attempted to escape by running towards a nearby house, the dog chased him and continued the attack. His face, hands, legs, and body were severely bitten. The dog had ripped out the left eye and torn apart the left side of his face.

In the morning, Dayananda’s blood-soaked body was found in the courtyard of the house. Shockingly, the dog was still sitting on the body licking the blood. Even when people tried to drive it away, it refused to leave. Later, when the body was shifted in an auto, the dog moved away, only to return and lick the blood stains near the shop, witnesses said.

Police have taken the dog into custody and sent blood samples found on its snout to the Forensic Science Laboratory for examination.

How the incident happened

Dayananda, an unmarried resident of Kumpala, was said to be habituated to alcohol. He usually slept outside shops at night and returned home in the morning. Between 3:30 am and 4 am on Friday, while he was sleeping in front of a shop, a stray dog launched a fierce attack.

The dog bit Dayananda’s face, hands, legs, and multiple parts of his body. It specifically gouged out his left eye and shredded the left side of his face. Around 7:30 am, his blood-stained body was found in a neighbour’s courtyard, and his gouged eye was found lying on the roadside nearby.

Ullal police register case

The attacking dog was still near the body when locals discovered it, continuing to lick the blood. Witnesses said that even after efforts to chase it away, the dog refused to move.

Ullal police arrived at the spot immediately and conducted an inspection. FSL and SOCO (Scene of Crime Officers) teams collected evidence, including blood samples from the dog’s snout, which have been sent for forensic testing.

Local residents in fear

Residents of Kumpala, under Someshwara Town Panchayat limits, claimed that the stray dog menace in the area has become severe. Following this gruesome incident, parents expressed deep anxiety asking, “If dogs don’t spare adults, how will our children be safe?”

Someshwara Town Panchayat vice-president Ravishankar has assured that necessary measures will be taken to control the stray dog population in the region.
