Mangalore, Feb 17: Stepping up the tempo for the upcoming elections to southwest teachers and graduates' constituencies of Karnataka legislative council, Congress candidate (graduates' constituency) S P Dinesh informed reporters on Friday February 17 that the party considers the elections very important, hence the process of selection of candidate was initiated nine months ago and during last September his candidature was announced.
Addressing a press meet, he said the process of enrolment of voters has been on for four months now, and that he visited Shimoga, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Kodagu and two taluks Channagiri and Honnalli of Davanagere district, all of which fall under the southwest graduates' constituency, to study the wants and needs of the voters.
The elections are scheduled to be held between June 10 and 15.
Recalling his association with the party, S P Dinesh said that he was active in Youth Congress and successfully led students in tackling issues like row over distribution of bus passes, hike in university fees structure, and error in marks cards.
He promised that if elected, he would fight for uniform syllabus in all universities and will be the voice of the graduates of the constituency in helping them to solve burning issues that have dogged them in the past years.
S P Dinesh also informed that 46,000 voters have already enrolled themselves in the constituency, and approximately 8,000 graduates enrolled in Dakshina Kannada district. He expected another 1,500 to 2,000 graduates to enroll themselves. "There is still time for graduates to enroll in voters' list, till April," he added.
He also said that though BJP had won the southwest graduates' constituency four times since it was set up in 1988, D H Shankarmurthy had not achieved any progress in respect of the graduates of this constituency. He appealed the enrolled graduates to vote for Congress this time and also called upon the party workers to make sure that the voters' list for the graduates' constituency is prepared with the active participation of graduates.
During the press meet, S P Dinesh and other party leaders paid tribute to higher education minister Dr V S Acharya.
Former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty, leaders P V Mohan, Suresh Ballal, T K Sudhir, Nazeer Ullal, Ivan D’Souza among others were present.
