Brisbane, Dec 5: Australian speedster Mitchell Starc carved his name into cricketing history on Thursday as he surpassed Pakistani legend Wasim Akram to become the most successful left-arm fast bowler in Test cricket.

The landmark moment came at the Gabba during the opening day of the day-night second Ashes Test, when the veteran pacer dismissed England’s Harry Brook to claim his 415th Test wicket — a milestone achieved at the very venue where he made his debut 14 years ago.

Akram, regarded as the greatest left-arm bowler to grace the sport, had set the benchmark with 414 wickets in 104 Tests. Starc powered past the record in just his 102nd match, aided by a sensational 7/58 in Perth during the first Test of the series.

With the achievement, the 35-year-old moves to 16th on the all-time Test wicket-takers list, and now has India’s Harbhajan Singh (417) and South Africa’s Shaun Pollock (421) within striking distance in the ongoing pink-ball contest. Beyond them lies New Zealand icon Sir Richard Hadlee, who sits on 431 wickets.
