Udhampur, Dec 15: An encounter is underway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district after security forces established contact with terrorists in the Majalta area on Tuesday, officials said.

Official sources said the gunfight erupted after joint teams launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Soan–Martha area of Majalta tehsil. As the search intensified, the hiding terrorists opened fire, which was retaliated by the security forces, triggering the encounter.
Gunshots were heard from the besieged village around 6 pm, officials said, adding that intermittent firing was continuing at the time of filing this report. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area, and all escape routes have been sealed to prevent the terrorists from fleeing.
