Udupi, Dec 16: Udupi district superintendent of police Hariram Shankar on Monday stated that the investigation related to the Akshata Poojary Brahmavar incident has been temporarily suspended and transferred to another competent investigating officer in the interest of justice.

In an official statement, the SP said that the incident occurred when Malpe police personnel visited a residence in Brahmavar to execute a court-issued arrest warrant against accused Ashiq, who had failed to comply with a 2014 court order directing him to deposit Rs 20 lac along with interest in connection with a road accident case.

The court had instructed the police to arrest the accused and produce him before the PCJ & CJM Court, Udupi, on or before December 17, 2025.

During the execution of the warrant, two women allegedly obstructed the police from performing their official duties, following which a case was registered at the Brahmavar Police Station.

SP Hariram Shankar noted that over the past two days, several community organisations, elected representatives, women’s groups, and political leaders have raised concerns and expressed varying opinions regarding the incident. In view of these developments, the investigation has been transferred to Brahmavar police station to ensure impartiality and transparency.

He further assured that the allegations levelled by the women against police personnel would be enquired into by senior officers, and strict disciplinary action would be taken if any lapses are established.

“The decision has been taken purely with the intention of ensuring justice. There is no need for the public to harbour any confusion or suspicion regarding this matter,” the superintendent of police clarified.
