Udupi, Dec 21: A deep-sea fishing boat returning after a fishing trip sank after its fibre hull cracked and water gushed in, in an incident reported within the Malpe harbour limits on December 18.

The boat Yashasvi, owned by Raju P Mendon of Badanidiyoor, developed a leak while returning from deep sea fishing. The tandel and five other crew members on board were rescued safely.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 11.30 am when the boat was about 17 nautical miles off Malpe. The bottom of the vessel reportedly hit an unidentified object, causing the fibre hull to crack and seawater to enter. Despite efforts by the crew to stop the inflow, they were unsuccessful.

Boats Hiranmayi and Mantrasmite, which were nearby, rushed to assist and attempted to tow the damaged vessel towards the harbour. However, around 5 pm, when the boat was about eight nautical miles from the coast, it sank.

Losses, including fish catch, fishing nets, diesel and other equipment, are estimated at around Rs 35 lac.
