Chandigarh, Dec 21: The Punjab government announced a ban on the sale of meat, tobacco, alcohol, and other intoxicants in the state’s newly designated ‘holy cities’ — Amritsar, Talwandi Sabo, and Anandpur Sahib. The announcement was made via a video message shared by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday.

The Chief Minister highlighted the religious and cultural significance of these cities, noting that three of the five Sikh takhts are located in Punjab: Sri Akal Takht Sahib (Amritsar), Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda), and Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib). He extended his congratulations to the Sikh community, saying, “These cities are not only religious centres but also important symbols of our cultural heritage.”

Strict regulations will now be enforced in the holy cities, including the complete prohibition of meat, alcohol, tobacco, and any intoxicating substances. The CM also assured that the government would facilitate the smooth movement of devotees by providing e-rickshaws, mini-buses, shuttle buses, and other public transport services.

The move follows a unanimous resolution passed last month during a special session of the Punjab Assembly in Anandpur Sahib, commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. On December 15, the state government issued a notification granting ‘holy city’ status to Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district, Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda, and the ‘Galiara’ area around the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

The designation aims to preserve the sanctity of these cities while promoting development and providing necessary facilities to pilgrims and residents alike.
