New Delhi, Dec 27: Ahead of New Year celebrations, the Delhi Police carried out an extensive overnight crackdown across the national capital to pre-empt crime during the festive rush, arresting hundreds and seizing illegal arms, narcotics and stolen property.
Police said Operation Aaghat 3.0 was conducted on the intervening night of Friday, during which 285 people were arrested under the Excise Act, NDPS Act and Gambling Act. In addition, 504 persons were apprehended under preventive measures, while 116 listed “bad characters” were also detained.

According to officials, recoveries during the operation included 21 country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges, 27 knives, 12,258 quarters of illicit liquor, 6.01 kg of ganja and Rs 2.30 lakh in cash.
Police also seized or recovered 310 mobile phones, 231 two-wheelers and one four-wheeler. In total, 1,306 people were rounded up as part of preventive action, officials said.
DCP South East Hemant Tiwari said the operation was aimed at strengthening law and order and ensuring public safety ahead of New Year celebrations.
Meanwhile, a brief exchange of fire was reported from Delhi’s Narela area, in which two wanted criminals were injured and arrested, police said.
The accused were identified as Afzal alias Imran and Chandan alias Kaku, both listed bad characters of the Narela police station and allegedly involved in multiple criminal cases.
Police said the duo was roaming with a firearm when a special picket was set up near NIT, Narela. On spotting the police, the accused allegedly fired three rounds, following which police retaliated, injuring both men in their legs.
The injured were first taken to RHC Hospital and later referred to BSA Hospital. Police recovered two pistols, mobile phones, a motorcycle and five empty cartridges from the spot.
A case has been registered under relevant sections, including attempt to murder, assault on a public servant and the Arms Act, and further investigation is underway, officials added.
