EC sets new schedule for BLOs ahead of West Bengal voter list finalization

Kolkata, Dec 31: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a revised schedule for Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. The exercise, aimed at updating voter details, will continue until the final voters’ list is released on February 14, 2026.

Under the updated timetable, BLOs are required to be present at their assigned polling booths for two hours each day from Monday to Friday. On weekends, their presence will extend to four hours on both Saturday and Sunday.

At the booths, BLOs will handle Forms 6, 7, and 8. Form-6 is used for adding new names to the voter list, while Form-7 deals with the deletion of names. Form-8 caters to requests for address changes, corrections in the electoral roll, replacement of voter ID cards, or marking details for voters with disabilities.

“This schedule will commence from January 2 and continue until the final voter list is published on February 14,” sources from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal, stated.

However, the mandatory daily presence of BLOs is expected to conclude by the end of January due to the upcoming West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) secondary examinations starting February 2, as most BLOs are teachers in state-run schools.

Sources in the CEO’s office noted, “The primary role of BLOs was during the first stage of the SIR, the enumeration process. Their responsibilities at this stage are now limited.”

The draft voters’ list for West Bengal was published on December 16, and following the final list release in February, the ECI will announce polling dates for the state’s crucial Assembly elections next year.
