Mangaluru, Jan 2: An alleged extortion attempt was reported from Angara Gudde within Mulki limits, where three persons are accused of targeting Abubakar, a livestock owner known for rearing buffaloes, milch cows and oxen. Abubakar’s buffaloes had recently won prizes in a Kambala competition.

According to the information available so far, the accused, who reportedly came from a neighbouring village, attempted to extort money from Abubakar. During the incident, they allegedly assaulted Shamshuddin, Abubakar’s father. Abubakar intervened and rescued his father, it is learnt.

Following the incident, residents of the village, comprising both Hindu and Muslim communities who have been living harmoniously, came out in support of Abubakar’s family. Neighbours, including members of the Hindu community, accompanied the family to the police station, where a complaint has been submitted. Police said a case will be registered based on the complaint.

Police have secured two of the accused, while one is absconding. It has also been reported that one of the accused later approached a hospital for medico-legal certification, claiming to be a victim. However, videography of the incident has surfaced, providing clarity on the sequence of events to some extent.

Officials stated that further facts may emerge after examining all available video footage, and action will be taken accordingly. It was also revealed that two of the accused have previous criminal cases of a serious nature against them.
