Bastar, Jan 3: More than 12 Naxalites were killed in separate encounters with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region on Saturday, police officials said.

According to officials, over 10 Naxalite cadres were gunned down during an exchange of fire in the forested areas of Sukma district, where a joint team of security personnel was carrying out an anti-Naxalite operation.

“More than 10 Naxalites have been neutralised so far. The operation is still underway and further details will be shared later,” a senior police official said.

In a separate incident, two Naxalites were killed in an encounter in the neighbouring Bijapur district. The gunfight reportedly broke out around 5 am when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), a specialised unit of the state police, was conducting an operation in the southern forest region of the district.

Officials said intermittent firing was still continuing in the area and additional information was awaited.

Chhattisgarh has witnessed intensified anti-Naxalite operations over the past year. As many as 285 Naxalites were killed in separate encounters with security forces across the state in 2025, police data showed.
