New Delhi, Jan 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India is gearing up in full strength to host the 2036 Olympic Games, highlighting the country’s growing capability and experience in organising major international sporting events.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 72nd National Volleyball Championship via video conference, Modi said India has successfully hosted more than 20 major global sporting events over the past decade. These include the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup and several prestigious international chess tournaments.

“The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be held in India. India is preparing with full strength to host the 2036 Olympics,” the Prime Minister said.

The National Volleyball Championship, being held from January 4 to 11, has attracted over 1,000 players from 58 teams representing states and institutions from across the country.

Officials said the tournament is expected to showcase a high level of competition, sportsmanship and emerging talent in Indian volleyball.

According to an official release, hosting the championship in Varanasi reflects the increasing focus on strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting athletic development in the city.

“It further enhances Varanasi’s profile as a hub for major national events, in line with its growing role in hosting important cultural and sporting initiatives,” the statement added.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as India continues to project itself as a global sporting destination, with large-scale investments in infrastructure, talent development and international event hosting.
