Mangaluru, Jan 5: A tragic incident unfolded on Monday, January 5, when a 20-year-old woman died by suicide after jumping from the Gurpur bridge.
The deceased has been identified as Navya, a resident of Kadepalla in Moodabidri.
The incident occurred in full view of a friend who was traveling with Navya on a scooter.
According to witnesses, Navya suddenly asked her friend to stop the vehicle near the bridge. Before her friend could comprehend what was happening, Navya leapt toward the river. In a harrowing attempt to save her, the friend reportedly managed to grab her hand, but Navya slipped away and plunged into the water.

Local authorities, including the police and fire and emergency services, arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted. Following a search operation, her body was recovered from the river.
While the investigation is in its early stages, a narrative of emotional distress has emerged. Preliminary reports suggest that Navya, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste (SC) community, was in a relationship with a young man. It is alleged that the man had promised to marry her but later reneged on that promise.
Sources indicate that Navya had attempted to contact him shortly before the incident and has reportedly left a death note detailing her grievances.
Bajpe police have registered a case and are currently investigating the claims of 'love betrayal' and the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
