New Delhi, Jan 13: A political controversy has erupted over the Centre’s reported move to block the Tamil film Jana Nayagan, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi accusing the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of targeting Tamil culture and attempting to silence the voice of the people.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, Gandhi took to X and issued a sharp message to the Narendra Modi-led government. “The I and B Ministry’s attempt to block Jana Nayagan is an attack on Tamil culture. Mr Modi, you will never succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people,” he said.

The row surfaced after reports emerged that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had initiated steps to block or withhold clearance for the film. While the Centre has not officially detailed its objections, sources indicated that concerns were raised over certification norms and content guidelines, particularly regarding the film’s political undertones and perceived parallels with contemporary governance.
The absence of official clarification has triggered speculation and criticism, especially in Tamil Nadu, where cinema has long been intertwined with political expression and social movements.
Jana Nayagan, which translates to “Leader of the People”, has drawn attention for its narrative centred on social justice, political accountability and mass leadership. Supporters argue that the film reflects Tamil political history and cultural identity, while opposition leaders and members of the film fraternity have termed the reported move as censorship that undermines artistic freedom.
Responding to the criticism, government sources maintained that any action taken with regard to the film is in accordance with the Cinematograph Act and established regulatory procedures, and denied allegations of cultural suppression.
