Wayne Rooney backs Thomas Tuchel as next permanent Manchester United manager

Manchester, Jan 16: Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has thrown his weight behind Thomas Tuchel, endorsing the German tactician as the ideal candidate to take over as the club’s next permanent manager in the summer.

Rooney said Tuchel’s strong Premier League pedigree, proven trophy-winning record, and his current stint with the England national team make him a suitable choice to lead the Red Devils forward. Tuchel, who took charge of England in January 2025 on an 18-month contract, is set to remain with the Three Lions until the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Tuchel is the one for me. He knows the Premier League, has won trophies and is doing well with England. Time will tell,” Rooney told the BBC.

The former striker also weighed in on other managerial options being linked with United. He noted that Xabi Alonso, who recently parted ways with Real Madrid, could be an attractive prospect but suggested the former midfielder may have his sights set on the Liverpool job in the future and might be willing to wait for that opportunity.

Manchester United are expected to assess their long-term managerial plans at the end of the season, with Tuchel now emerging as a strong contender following Rooney’s endorsement.
