Mangaluru: Lorry driver convicted in scooter rider death, fined Rs 21,000

Mangaluru, Jan 17: In connection with the death of a scooter rider, the JMFC 8th court has sentenced lorry driver M D Satish to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 21,000.

The incident occurred on November 27, 2019, at around 11.50 am. Priya Y Suvarna (42) was riding her scooter from KPT towards Kottara Chowki when, in front of BMS Hotel at Kuntikana, lorry driver M D Satish rammed the lorry into the rear of the two-wheeler. As a result, the scooter rider fell onto the road along with the vehicle and sustained serious head injuries. She was admitted to a private hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries the same day.

Following the incident, a case was registered at the West Traffic police station. The then police inspector Amanulla conducted the investigation and filed the charge sheet before the court.

After examining the witnesses and hearing arguments from both sides, JMFC 8th court judge Fawaz P A sentenced the accused to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 21,000.

Assistant public prosecutor Geetha Rai and assistant public prosecutor Aaron D’Souza, Vittla, appeared on behalf of the government.

    I think we need better road and stricter rules and proper implementation of rules. Now question is who is going to implement them ? As long as we live in compulsive thing this things will go on . I heard nice of driver who was fined for breaking some traffic rules . Traffic cops advised him not to challenge in the court and later on repented after experiencing it.

    Thats the value of life in India of a young person. No doubt we have 150000 death per year dur to accidents in India. But drunken driving is Rs 10000
