Udupi, Feb 26: A dense cover of fog has been embracing the region early morning over the past few days. Though there's been scorching heat during the day, as usual, the mornings have been quite cold.
The dense fog is a result of high temperatures during day time and a dip in the night. Cool winds blow from the sea, and water content in the atmosphere increases, condensing to form fog in the early mornings. This phenomenon is called radiation fog, wherein heat absorbed by the earth's surface during the day is radiated into space. The humidity reaches almost 100 percent as the earth continues to cool and the fog is formed. The fog will be denser in areas surrounded by trees.
The worst hit are the commuters, as there is a steep drop in visibility. Fog lights come on, and people are advised to drive carefully.
The fog is also an indication of rains. The Bangalore Met dept officers say that the fog may continue for another week.
