Udupi: Assault case accused who fled district hospital nabbed by police

Udupi, Jan 24: Police have successfully apprehended an accused in an assault case who had fled from the Udupi District Hospital, under the limits of the Brahmavar police station.

The accused has been identified as Kiran Pinto (49), a resident of Tenkanidiyur. Kiran Pinto was one of the accused in an assault incident that occurred in front of a bar in Brahmavar on January 18. He had sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted as an inpatient at the Udupi Ajjarkadu hospital. However, he escaped from the hospital in the early hours of January 21.

Following an intensive search operation, the Brahmavar police traced and detained the accused on January 24 and produced him before the court.

According to the complaint, on the night of January 18, Ashwini Naik of Kodavoor, along with her friend Sushma Gowda, had come in search of her uncle’s son Praveen near a bar in Brahmavar. At that time, the accused Kiran Pinto, who was present at the spot, allegedly abused Ashwini Naik and Sushma Gowda in obscene language along with Praveen D’Cruz.

When Ashwini attempted to wake up Praveen who was present there, Praveen D’Cruz allegedly pushed Ashwini and Sushma Gowda to the ground and tore Ashwini’s clothes. A case in this regard was registered at the Brahmavar police station.

Also, in a counter-complaint filed by Kiran Pinto of Tenkanidiyur village, he stated that Praveen had asked him to come near the bar. He alleged that Sujeeth D’Souza, Sushma Gowda and Ashwini Naik arrived at the spot in a car, where Praveen was also present. During the altercation, Praveen D’Cruz allegedly took an iron rod from the car and assaulted Kiran Pinto, causing injuries.

In connection with the case, police had already taken Sujeeth D’Souza of Petri and Praveen D’Cruz of Thirthahalli into custody and produced them before the court.

The accused Sushma Gowda is currently absconding. Kiran Pinto, who was undergoing inpatient treatment at the Udupi Ajjarkadu hospital for injuries sustained in the incident, had fled from the hospital before being traced and detained.
